SAN DIEGO

Beautiful beaches, large canyons, an abundance of wildlife and lots of attractions is what has made San Diego a favorite tourist area.  This large city is home to a big naval area, due to the deep sea port and is the second largest city in California and the eighth largest city in America.

With so much to do and see, it’s no surprise that San Diego has a booming tourism industry.  From high mountains such as Cowles Mountain, which is the highest, to Black Mountain and Mount Soledad.

The warm climate makes this a place you can visit all year round as it has warm, dry summers and mild winters. Snow has only been seen five times in one hundred years.

If you enjoy outdoors, you don’t want to miss the range of nature reserves and parks on offer. Torrey Pines State Reserve, Mission Trails Regional Park, Tecolote Canyon Natural Park and San Clemente Canyon are just a few where you can spend your days walking, bicycling and hiking.

Some of the popular attractions include the sandy beaches, safari park, SeaWorld San Diego and the many museums.  The museums which seem to be preferred are San Diego Natural History Museum, San Diego Museum or Art, Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego and the San Diego Maritime Museum.

History and culture is very important in the city and there is a big theatrical presence, spend your evening enjoying a musical performance at Old Globe Theatre, La Jolla Playhouse or San Diego Repertory Theatre.

Getting around the city is easy.  San Diego International Airport welcomes flights from all over the world and once you arrive you can take advantage of the extensive trolley busy system that will get you anywhere you need to go with ease.  If you prefer, you can hire a car, but that’s if you don’t mind figuring out the roads in a strange city.

Cuisine is very mixed; with San Diego sitting adjacent to the Mexican border it’s no surprise that there is a large Mexican influence in the cuisine. There is also a range of Spanish and American cuisine to choose from.  There are hundreds of excellent restaurants with award winning chefs for a romantic dinner out, many family restaurants and lots of cafes for a light snack while touring the area.

The San Diego Zoo is a top attraction in the city along with the San Diego Air & Space Museum, USS Midway Museum and Balboa Park.

With San Diego being so tourist orientated, you will have a huge choice of hotels, from small boutique style hotels or large magnificent and luxurious hotels, you are guaranteed to find that perfect one that will make your holiday memorable.

Some of the top hotel groups include Hilton and Best Western, where you can enjoy luxury at its best, with swimming pools, bar, restaurants on site and air conditioned rooms for added luxury.Save big on cheap flights, hotels, cars, cruises and vacations

A bit of information you may find interesting about San Diego is it was originally claimed as Spanish in 1542 and was later claimed as Mexican in 1821. San Diego only became part of the US in 1850 during the Mexican – American War and this is why the cuisine has such strong Mexican and Spanish influence.

Old Town San Diego State Historic Park is where the city was originally situated just below Presidio Hill. The city was later moved which is now San Diego Downtown.

San Diego was also a large military center during World War II, which caused a massive increase in the population. It remains a large military center today due to the deep sea port which is home to many naval bases.
